Ultrasound is a useful and accessible modality to assess the musculoskeletal (MSK) system. This
includes investigating injuries to ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. Common areas we scan
include shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles.

Preparation:

No preparation necessary. Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your appointment.

Please bring your Medicare card, healthcare/pension card and any previous imaging reports related to the specific area being scanned.

Procedure:

You may be asked to put on a gown.

Water based gel will be applied to the area under investigation, to allow optimal contact with the
transducer.

The sonographer may ask you to do specific movements related to the dynamic assessment of the
area being investigated. Please let them know if you experience any discomfort.

This procedure takes anywhere between 10-30 minutes depending on the nature of the injury.

The sonographer will take images which will then be interpreted by our radiologist (specialist). A
final report will be sent to your referrer within 48 hours.
